Australian Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, when asked by the ABC on the escalating human rights crisis in West Papua, defended Australia’s role in training Indonesians in counter-terrorism. He cited Australia's interest to do so in so far as it was in keeping with Australia’s preference to see the Indonesians have a strong, a formidable, anti-terrorist capacity.
According to him, this relationship was a must in Australia's interests. However, the training was to deal specifically with the task at hand. This task was not about a capacity in counter-insurgency but rather counter-terrorism. Thus, Australia has confessed to making a poor judgement in assisiting Indonesia to commit acts of genocide and hence directly contributed to the escalating humanitarian crisis is West Papua.
